My MD & OnboardMD Apps
In-house design contributions for third-party managed apps
Although both apps were originally developed and maintained by a third party, I contributed in-house design support to help accelerate new feature development. I worked on flows and screens across both My MD and OnboardMD, including financial goal tracking, plan management, form completion, school and specialty selection, and appointment booking. My work ensured visual consistency with existing app styles while introducing cleaner layouts, clearer navigation, and improved usability where possible.
Overview
MD Financial has two mobile apps — My MD, which helps clients manage their financial plans, and OnboardMD, which supports medical students and residents through their career journeys. Both apps were originally designed and are still maintained by a third-party vendor. However, to speed up delivery and reduce reliance on the vendor for smaller feature additions, design work for new features was increasingly handled in-house.
I was brought in to support that effort — designing new screens and flows that integrated seamlessly into the existing app environments, without the luxury of full control over components or logic.
Challenge
The core design challenge was working within a third-party-controlled system — one where components, styling, and behavior were already defined and locked down. I had to design new features and expanded flows that felt cohesive with the existing app without breaking anything or introducing visual debt.
Another layer of complexity came from the apps’ distinct audiences. My MD targets established clients with financial plans, while OnboardMD caters to students navigating medical school and career decisions. I needed to ensure clarity, approachability, and consistency across very different use cases — while designing within someone else’s sandbox.

Design Highlights
Financial Plan – Goal Flows (My MD)
Redesigned the goal-setting flow to make it feel more conversational and intuitive. I restructured the entry points and simplified the way users reviewed and tracked personal financial goals — including retirement, education, and vacation targets.
Document Access & Plan Summaries (My MD)
I redesigned how users view and download key planning documents. The new design prioritized clarity, spacing, and iconography — making it easier to find and understand each file at a glance.
Appointment Booking (My MD)
The original booking flow was fragmented. I created a cleaner interaction for choosing locations, selecting services, and finding available times — improving UX without altering the underlying logic managed by the third-party vendor.
Medical School Browser (OnboardMD)
Designed a visual, tile-based experience that let students explore Canadian medical schools. The layout needed to be image-driven, fast to scan, and responsive across devices.
Specialty Explorer (OnboardMD)
Created an accessible tool for students to compare medical specialties based on work-life balance, salary, and job availability. I designed collapsible sections and comparison views to present data clearly without overwhelming the user.
