My MD Secure Investment Platform
Designing a unified, goal-oriented investment experience for physicians
I led the end-to-end design of this third-generation investment platform built for Canadian physicians. Working within the limits of a Bootstrap rebuild and legacy APIs, I took the product well beyond the agency’s initial screens, simplifying complex flows for equities, mutual funds, and funding accounts, and introducing two-factor authentication. The final result was a responsive, purpose-driven experience focused on clarity, trust, and ease of use.
Overview
My MD is a secure investment platform that allows MD clients — primarily physicians — to manage their investments, track financial goals, view performance, access documents, and communicate securely with their financial advisor.
This project involved designing the third-generation version of the client accounts platform. I was the Lead Designer, responsible for carrying the work forward beyond what the external agency delivered — filling in the functional gaps, refining user flows, and ensuring the experience worked end to end.
Challenge
While a third-party agency established some early design direction, they delivered only a few screens. The platform was being completely rebuilt on Bootstrap, which introduced structural limitations and constraints that affected layout flexibility, responsiveness, and theming. My job was to complete the product design while working within those constraints — ensuring consistency and usability without fighting the grid.
This wasn’t just a matter of polish. I had to design a complete, usable product from a partial starting point — one that functioned seamlessly across device sizes and supported a full range of account and investment actions.
My Role
As Lead Designer, I owned:
End-to-end UX and UI design
Product strategy support across the platform
UX writing for all key flows
Independent research to support design decisions
Stakeholder presentations
Cross-functional collaboration with PMs, engineers, marketing, and compliance
I acted as a design lead and systems thinker, ensuring every screen made sense — visually, functionally, and technically.
Design Highlights
End-to-End Flow Completion
The agency delivered visuals for a handful of pages. I was responsible for building out the rest — every state, modal, and edge case — ensuring the experience could support real users and real accounts. I aligned my work closely with Bootstrap’s limitations to maintain a consistent grid and component style across screens.
Investment Activity
I simplified flows for purchasing mutual funds and equities, breaking them into clear, progressive steps. I prioritized clarity and reassurance, using inline validation, plain language, and subtle affordances to guide users through unfamiliar actions.
Account Funding
The Manage Cash interaction was redesigned from the ground up. I introduced a modal-based, three-tab structure (Add, Withdraw, Move) that made it easy for users to complete actions without context-switching or form fatigue.
Two-Factor Authentication
Security was a requirement, but I designed the 2FA flow to feel optional and unobtrusive. The interface was stripped back to its essentials, with clear explanations and just one decision point.
Mobile-First Experience
I optimized all screens for responsive use, designing within Bootstrap’s grid but testing across devices to ensure functionality and clarity. The mobile experience retained full platform capability, including charts, goal views, and secure document access.
